General - The use of totems: belief in a supernatural connection between humans and animals or objects. Also called totemism.
North American - The belief that certain animals and birds were the ancestors of the tribes. Admiring the qualities in animals which they would like to possess themselves, qualities such as cunning and speed, the tribes came to name themselves after the animal they most admired which became regarded as their ancestor and, eventually, as their tribal god. On occassion, identified as totemism.
