New Zealand - A Maori chief. Husband of Rutukia. His wife left him and ran off with Tu-te-Koropanga so he went to heaven to learn the wisdom of his ancestors who taught him magic. He found his wife dancing at a feast arranged by her new husband and lured her away with a magic scent. He then cut off her head, which he buried in a box, leaving the headless body for Tu-te- Koropanga to find. In the spring, when the new growth started in all living things, he dug up the box and out stepped Rutukia, now fully restored. In some references, called Tamanui.
