Red Branch

Irish - An élite battalion guarding Ulster, bodyguard of the king. The Red Branch was founded by Ross the Red and was the counterpart of the Fianna, the bodyguard of the high-king. Its most famous champion was Cuchulainn. The name was also used for the assembly hall for the warriors, one of three halls at Emain Macha. When the men were at meals, they hung their weapons in another hall, the Speckled House, so that they could not fight one another. Referred to as Red Branch, Craebruad, Craebruad, Craebderg, Red Branch or Ruddy Brach.
