Greek - King of Thebes. Son of Echion and Agave. Cousin of Dionysus. He took over the throne when his grandfather, Cadmus, resigned. When he tried to prevent Dionysus from inducing the women of Thebes to join his drunken revels and dressed as a woman to spy on them, the Maenads went berserk and tore him apart, led by his own mother, Agave, who pulled off his head. Sometimes identified as Pentheus, 'pain' or 'pain'.
