South American - A diviner among the Africans of Surinam. These people, male or female, are said to be able to cure sickness by questioning a person's soul. Having brought the soul up into the patient's head, the diviner finds answers to his questions by watching the surface of water in a bowl, by the opening and closing of a fan or by looking in a mirror. Other varieties of diviner are known as kartaman, obiaman, piaiman, wintiman and wisiman. In some accounts, referred to as lukumans, lookman, lookman or lukman.
