Great Awabi

Japanese - A sea-god in the form of a huge earshell. When the fisherman, Kansuke, came to investigate a bright light rising from the sea, he fell into the water and sank. His son, Matakichi, failed to find him; he had been eaten by the Great Awabi. Matakichi became a disciple of a priest and together they prayed for the soul of Kansuke, whereupon the spirit of the Great Awabi appeared to the priest and confessed what had happened and then killed himself, giving instructions that the huge pearl inside him should be given to Matakichi. Also called Great Awabi, Awabi or Awabi.
