El Dorado

South American - A city or country of fabulous wealth; A priest-king of this city. The report that the king of this city was covered every day with powdered gold led many to go in fruitless search for the place. Another version says that a new king was stripped and covered with gold before being sent out on a raft to an island in the lake, Guatavita. Here he stripped off the gold and threw it into the lake, returning then to the shore where he was accepted as king. In some accounts, the name referred to a golden statue of the king. At times, known as El Dorado, Eldorado, Eldorado, Gilded Man, The, Gilded Man, The, The Gilded Man or The Gilded Man.
