Greek - Queen of Thebes. Wife of Lycus. Lycus had put aside his wife Antiope in favour of Dirce, and they imprisoned and ill-treated Antiope. Amphion and Zethus, sons of Antiope and Apollo, killed Lycus and Dirce. She was tied by her hair to the horns of a bull, which dragged her to her death. She was changed into a spring of the same name. In some accounts Antiope is not the wife of Lycus but his niece, and he gave her to Dirce as a slave after rescuing her from Epopeus, who had abducted her. On occassion, called Dirce.
