Greek - A water nymph of Sicily. She witnessed the abduction of Core by Hades and tried to prevent it but failed. Grieving, she wasted away and was unable to tell Demeter, when she came looking for her daughter, what she had seen and heard. Demeter spotted Core's girdle floating in the pool and deduced the rest. In another version, Cyane was a river which rose in fury to try to prevent the abduction Sometimes referred to as Cyane.
