Greek - A nymph. Daughter of Lycaon and Nonaeris. Mother of Arcas by Zeus. Zeus, having seduced Callisto, changed her into a bear to deceive Hera who, jealous as usual, had the bear hunted by the hounds of Artemis. Another version says that Hera herself changed Callisto into a bear. Zeus placed her in the heavens as the Great Bear and her son Arcas as the Little Bear. Some say that she was hunted and killed by Arcas. At times, referred to as Callisto, Artemis Calliste, Artemis Calliste, Kallisto or Kallisto.
