Pacific Islands - In New Caledonia, a stone said to contain the soul of a dead person. Some small animal captured by a priest during a vigil at the side of a corpse is plunged into a river or stream, from which the priest then produces a stone in which the soul is petrified. Sometimes referred to as bao, loho, loho or bao.
