Greek - A beekeeper. Son of Apollo and Cyrene. Husband of Autonoe. Father of Actaeon and Macris. He killed a lion on Mount Pelion and the first swarm of bees emerged from its carcase. He fell in love with Eurydice. When she ran away from him she was bitten by a snake and died. As punishment, all his bees died and he fought with Proteus to make him disclose what had caused their death. When he sacrificed some cattle to the dead nymph's memory, bees rose from the rotting carcases. He was later revered as the god of shepherds and beekeepers. In some accounts, identified as Aristaeus, Aristaios or Aristaios.
