Greek - A Lydian weaver. Daughter of Idmon. She challenged Athena at weaving. When her work turned out to be the equal of that of the goddess, Athena beat her severely, whereupon Arachne hanged herself. The remorseful Athena changed her into a spider so that she could continue spinning and weaving. In some versions she is described as the goddess of weaving. In some accounts, known as Arachne, 'spider', 'spider', Bilik, Ictinike, Inktomi or Sus'sistinnako.
