Greek - King of Iolcus. Son of Cretheus and Tyro. Husband of Alcimede. Father of Jason and Promachus. He was in dispute with his half brother, Pelias, over the throne of Iolcus and, to avoid being killed by him, committed suicide by drinking bull's blood. In another story, Pelias imprisoned him and took over the throne. He was an old man when Jason returned with the Golden Fleece but the sorceress Medea restored his youth and vigour. Sometimes identified as Aeson, Aison or Aison.
